Crisscrossing Surf, Hawaii

On an overcast day in Oahu, I became fascinated with the patterns made by the surf as it rolled in to Kailua Beach.  With the hill in the background this scene suggests to me the elemental beauty of nature … on display at Insider Art.

Opening Reception for  Insider Art

You’re invited to our “Insider Art” exhibit at Union Street Gallery.

When:  Opening Reception is this Friday, June 19, 6-9pm.  The exhibit continues until July 18.

What:   Insider Art is an eclectic mix of fun and inspiring work by Union Street Gallery Studio & Guild Artists. The reception is free and open to the public.  This annual exhibit showcases the artists’ most recent work as well as older work shown in new and exciting ways. The work in the show highlights a diverse mix of approaches to subjects, media and styles and includes painting, drawing, pastel, photography, collage, sculpture, and found object assemblage.

There will be refreshments and live music performed by Grammy Contender Composer Keenan Baxter! The artists will also be present to talk about their work.

In addition to my photo of Hawaii, one of my digital artworks is on display: Three Lift Bridges, Calumet River.

Three Lift Bridges, Calumet River

In photographing the area, I was continually drawn to the strong shapes of three lift bridges that are side by side and that once serviced three active parallel train tracks. These bridges are prominent in most of the photographs.   The steel laced Chicago Skyway provides a unifying background presence running throughout the series.  The electrical lines draped across the top of many photos give a light and dynamic counterbalance to the heavy steel and concrete masses below. The waterway lends a feeling of the eternal and acts as an added unifying element.
