It remains an internationally-known architectural treasure in Chicago. A radical departure from traditional Victorian architecture, the structure served as an inspiration to architects such as Louis Sullivan, Mies van der Rohe, and the young Frank Lloyd Wright and helped redefine domestic architecture. Glessner House is located at 1800 South Prairie Avenue, on the southwest corner of Prairie Avenue and 18th Street.

This historic house museum is one of Chicago's most iconic and influential residential structures. H. H. Richardson's last surviving work in Chicago was commissioned by John and Frances Glessner. This urban residential masterpiece's radical design perplexed neighbors but was quickly embraced by architects for its innovative floor plan. With principal rooms facing inward toward a light-filled private courtyard, it helped create a new American style of residential architecture. An important collection of original furnishings features pieces representing the Aesthetic, Modern Gothic, English and American Arts and Crafts movements. Glessner House was saved from demolition in 1966 thanks to preservation efforts that resulted in the creation of both the Glessner House Museum and the Chicago Architecture Foundation.

Tour Times: Wednesday through Sunday at 11:30am, 1:00pm, and 2:30pm

Guided tours are limited to 15 people per tour on a first-come, first-served, walk-in basis. Considered the oldest juried art fair in the Midwest, our fair typically features the work of 250 exhibitors. Most are returning artists, but each year between 50 and 75 new exhibitors are invited to participate by a jury made up of collectors, critics, curators and artists. The goal of the 57th Street Art Fair is to provide a venue for creators of quality fine art and fine craft to meet with the art-buying public. The 57th Street Art Fair is a tax-exempt organization and all proceeds are used to produce the annual Fair and to help fund other related non-profit, art-related activities. This event is FREE to attend!

Join the fair's artists for demonstrations of their process of art making at the corner of 56th Street and Kimbark Avenue.
