I have often combined my love of travel with painting, but few places are as beautiful and hospitable as Barra de Navidad, a coastal village on the western shore of Mexico where the small local population mingles with tourists and artists. While visiting Barra the vibrant tropical colors inspired my non-objective painting, Mexican RoadtTrip. A unifying theme in my art is conveying the feeling or mood evoked by the subject, and this painting reflects a sense of exuberance. In style, all sections of the painting are transected by strong, heavy, black lines, with vivid bursts of color. The painting captures the feeling of the life and colors of Mexico using heavy textures, washes and linear overlays.
Road Trip Exhibit At Studio 659
As Studio 659 put it: “You need not be drugged crazy like Hunter S. Thompson rubbing greasy elbows with motorcycle roughians or a romantic Beatnik looking for escape. That desire to flee crawls within every soul; a voice inside demanding that we run, to catch a freight train to nowhere, to stroll that road untraveled or to simply drive without direction. Nothing is as inspiring as the open road when the social restraints of ‘home’ are obliterated. It may have been just a day trip or a years-long journey.”

A Little About Us- Studio 659: Studio 659 is an Art Studio in the heart of the historic downtown district of Whiting, Indiana at 1413 119th Street. Located only 30 minutes from Chicago on the shores of Lake Michigan, Studio 659 is not only an art gallery but a studio which offers classes to youth and adults as well as puts on live music events, book signings and more.The Studio is headed by the Whiting Arts Council which was a brainchild of Mayor Joe Stahura. The Council is made up of representatives from all of Whiting’s artistic organizations including: Whiting Lakefront Symphony, Marian Theatre Guild, Arts Alive!, 119th Street. Artists, Calumet College, Whiting High School’s Art Department as well as at-large members of the community who have art backgrounds.
